We had a busy week cutting and bundling blanket coats, and meeting with volunteers. We are cutting another batch of coats, but we need more volunteers to help us meet our goal. Email tailor@philipsparks.com with the subject Blanket Coat Project if you would like to volunteer to sew a coat. We are hoping to have them delivered back to us this year by Saturday Dec 14th so we can put the button holes and buttons on them and deliver them before the holidays this year. About the #blanketcoatproject This year will be our fourth year working on the Blanket Coat Project. Last year, under the lead of one of our team members, Craig Renaud, and with the help of volunteers, we were able to produce and distribute 30 coats to our neighbours without homes. With another Toronto winter on the horizon, we plan on working on the project again. Coats and other items will be distributed through a number of outreach programs in the city of Toronto and all work is done on a volunteer basis. As tailors and garment workers, we thought one thing we could do to help our community is make coats. We decided that a blanket style would be the best option. Our coats are made of wool and lined with wool for maximum warmth. Cut oversized and paired with a wide wool belt, they fit a range of body types. They are also of simple construction, allowing us to enlist help from home sewists and expand production to make as many as possible. Over the last 3 years 83 coats have been produced and distributed through this network. With another Toronto winter on the horizon, we plan on working on the project again. As tailors and garment workers, we thought one thing we could do is make coats. We decided that a blanket style would be the best option. If sewing is not your thing but you would still like to help, monetary contributions will be used to buy the fabric and notions used to make coats. Any amount beyond what's used on this year's batch will be used to donate necessities such as socks and underwear or put towards next year's Blanket Coat Project.
